C-Section Scar Massage &
Recovery in Bagshot, Surrey

Reconnect, Recover and Move Comfortably
After a C-Section

At Physica Health, we understand that recovery after a caesarean birth goes beyond the initial healing of your scar. Even once the wound has closed, many women experience tightness, pulling sensations, numbness, or discomfort around their C-section scar — sometimes months or even years later. Our C-section scar massage and recovery sessions are delivered by our specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapists in Bagshot, Surrey, who have extensive experience supporting women through postnatal recovery. We provide gentle, hands-on treatment to help restore mobility, comfort and confidence after a caesarean birth.

Why C-Section Scar Massage Matters

Following a C-section, the layers of skin, fascia and muscle heal with scar tissue that can occasionally adhere to deeper tissues. This can lead to:

  • A feeling of tightness or pulling across your tummy
  • Discomfort or pain during movement, exercise or intimacy
  • Reduced core activation or pelvic floor engagement
  • Altered posture or tension in the surrounding muscles Scar massage and soft-tissue work can help to release restrictions, improve circulation, support lymphatic drainage, and restore normal movement between these layers. It can also improve your connection and awareness of the area — an important step in postnatal recovery.

Our Approach at Physica Health

Every woman’s recovery is unique, so we start with a detailed women’s health physiotherapy assessment. Your session may include:

  • Hands-on manual therapy: gentle scar mobilisation and soft-tissue release (no electrical devices)
  • Instrument-assisted techniques: where suitable, to aid tissue mobility (used only when clinically appropriate)
  • Education and self-care advice: guidance on how to care for and massage your scar at home
  • Assessment of surrounding tissues: including abdominal wall, pelvic floor and posture
  • Integration into your recovery plan: scar work can be part of your Mummy MOT® or Post-natal Wellness Check, ensuring your whole body is supported We focus on helping you move better, feel stronger, and regain confidence in your body after surgery.

When Can You Start?

Scar massage can usually begin once your wound is fully healed, there are no scabs or signs of infection, and you’ve had your 6–8 week postnatal check. Even if your C-section was months or years ago, it’s never too late to improve scar mobility and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is C-section scar massage?

It’s a gentle, hands-on therapy that helps to improve the movement and comfort of the tissues around your caesarean scar. By releasing tightness and adhesions, it can support healing, reduce discomfort and improve how your core and pelvic floor work together.

Does it hurt?

The treatment should be comfortable. You might feel gentle pulling or stretching, but your physiotherapist will always work within your comfort level. Our approach is guided by your body’s response and your stage of recovery.

When can I start treatment?

Typically from 6–8 weeks post-C-section, once your scar is fully healed. However, if you’re unsure, your physiotherapist will assess this at your first appointment. Many women also benefit from scar work months or even years later.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies. Some women notice improvement in one or two sessions, while others benefit from several, especially if the scar is older or causing deeper restrictions. Your physiotherapist will guide you based on your goals and response to treatment.

Can scar work be included in my Mummy MOT® or Post-natal Wellness Check?

Yes. Scar assessment and mobilisation can be integrated into your Women’s Health Physiotherapy session, Mummy MOT®, or Post-natal Wellness Check as part of your wider recovery plan.

Can you recommend products to help with scar healing?

Yes. During your session, your physiotherapist can advise on and supply clinically recommended products that may support scar healing and tissue recovery — such as silicone gel sheets, scar creams, or massage oils. We’ll ensure any recommendations are appropriate for your stage of healing and your skin type.

What if my scar feels numb or sensitive?

It’s very common to notice areas of numbness, tingling, or sensitivity around your C-section scar. This is due to small nerve endings healing after surgery. Gentle massage, movement, and desensitisation techniques can often help improve sensation over time — and your physiotherapist can guide you safely through these.

Is it ever too late to work on my C-section scar?

Not at all. Even if your C-section was months or years ago, scar tissue can still benefit from gentle mobilisation. Many women notice improvements in comfort, posture, and body awareness even long after their initial recovery period. It’s never too late to make progress.
